At just 25 years of age, Italian swimmer Tania Cagnotto has become one of the best divers in the world and the best of all time in Italy.
She was inspired by her father Giorgio and mother Carmen – both divers during the ’70s – who passed on their skills. From then on, Cagnotto has never looked back.
She is the first Italian female to win a world medal (bronze in Montreal in 2005 for the 3-metre springboard event). And success has followed success: she told Corriere Canadese/Tandem that 2009 has been the year during which “I’ve gained the most satisfaction, paying back my many sacrifices.”
Memories of the three gold medals at the European Diving Championships in Turin, and another two podium appearances and the World Championships in Rome are still fresh in the minds of Italian fans. Cagnotto returned from the capital with a bronze (single 3-metre springboard) and a historic silver (3-metre springboard synchronized event).

You competed twice. You described yourself as very emotional during the first competition. Any regrets?
“I was very tense. I was really feeling a lot of pressure and I didn’t deal with it well. This influenced the performance and I had to work at handling my emotions and put on a consistent performance without making any major errors. I could have won silver, but this is good too.”
A silver that went to Canada's Emilie Heymans. What do you think?
“I knew she was one of my main rivals so it wasn’t a surprise. She did well and I compliment her.”
In the synchro event with Francesca Dallapè, you made history, and you won the first silver medal of your career. Was that your most satisfying win?
“Winning as a pair is always wonderful – it’s something special. You share all the emotions, from the tension to the ultimate joy. I can say that it was definitely one of the most emotional moments of my life.”
How was it leading up to that final?
