Calabria's Saperi e sapori - "Knowledge and Flavours" - are in the air. Scents, good food, and culture: Toronto has celebrated every aspect of this Italian region all week long.
As in the past, the Ontario Federation of Calabrese organized the event with the goal of showcasing their region of origin and raising funds for their most ambitious project, Centro Calabria. "The proceeds of our initiatives go toward turning this dream into a magnificent reality," remarked Gus Mandarino, treasurer of the Federation chaired by Antonio Nicaso. "Excavation and preparation works are underway and everything is proceeding well."
Vaughan's City Playhouse was sold out for a performance of Tutti a tavola, Francesca Schembri's comedic play. "The play presents the life of a family of Italian immigrants in Canada, with all the problems due to integrating in a new country and the encounter/clash of the two cultures. It's very enjoyable," commented Gesualdo Mastruzzo, Vice President of the Federation and chairman of Saperi & Sapori. "The actors are good, and the play was received with the usual success." Added Mandarino, "the actors are mostly of Calabrese origin, and they are glad of our plan to include a theatre within Centro Calabria."
Before the play, the Federation offered a buffet based on Calabrese specialities. "Four restaurants - Biagio Ristorante, La Gondola, Il Posticino and Verdi Hospitality Centre - catered to our guests," concluded Mastruzzo. "A finger-licking buffet, and the participants truly enjoyed it."
"Last Wednesday, Saperi e sapori promoted the conference entitled "Entrepreneurial vision from opposites sides of the Atlantic" that took place at Vaughan's City Hall. In addition to many Calabrese, the Vaughan city councillors and minister Joseph Cordiano attended it," continued Mandarino. "We had a significant speech by Filippo Callipo, president of Confindustria Calabria, who spoke about a Calabrese industrialist's life and opportunities in spite of difficulties, while Nancy Adamo, CEO of Hockey Valley Resort and Verdi Hospitality Centre, focused on what it means to be a Calabrese in Ontario. Two stories of successful Calabrese."
