The 2004 Christmas Concert, held at the Centre for the Arts and dedicated to the memory of Dan Iannuzzi, showcased the progress made by the Palestrina Chorus and the Schola Cantorum and the talent of some soloists.
The traditional event, organized by Centro Scuola e Cultura Italiana and its director Alberto Di Giovanni, was attended by a large audience of about 840 people, mostly Italian-Canadians who were moved by the closing song, "Tu scendi dalle stelle".
The audience included Consul Marco Giomini and RCMP Chief Superintendent Ben Soave. Soave said, "I liked this show very much. In particular, "Tu scendi dalle stelle" reminded me when I was a young kid in Italy, and we used to sing it at Christmas time."
This year, the concert was dedicated to Dan Iannuzzi, founder and president of Corriere Canadese; Iannuzzi's children Michael and Doreen and wife Elena Caprile - editor in chief of Corriere Canadese - were in attendance, and were favourably impressed by the quality achieved by the Palestrina Chorus and the younger kids of Schola Cantorum.
Several soloists emerged from The Palestrina Chorus, such as tenor Joey Niceforo who sang Mille Cherubini in Coro with the kids of the Schola Cantorum Children's Choir.
Joey Niceforo, 23, bears a last name of Greek origins, but his family came from Calabria. He's living witness to the ancient mix of Greek and Italic populations that took place over two millennia ago "between Scylla and Charybdis". Last August, Niceforo went to study in Siena to improve his singing and his Italian pronunciation. His achievements were clearly showcased last week. The other soloists were Diana Pauletto, soprano, a 20-year-old Friulian (who recently studied in Siena, at Accademia Chigiana, thanks to a Centro Scuola bursary), and Riccardo Janniello, tenor, of Campanian origins, also 20 years old. All who are truly skilled.
The progress was clear, the result of Centro Scuola's bursaries and the singers' dedication and passion.
However, the greatest progress was shown by the Schola Cantorum children, conducted by Franca Di Giovanni and Michelle Amenta. Last year there were 35 of them, this year their number has increased to 62: very attentive and enthusiastic.
