The Countdown Continues
Vaughan Mills in final phase of construction before opening

People are waiting to "Discover Ontario," i.e. to roam the halls of Vaughan Mills, the new megamall under construction in Vaughan that's chosen those words as its motto. Last week a group of journalists were invited to preview the mall, slated for opening on November 4.
The mall is currently swarming with 1,000 skilled workers, busy completing decoration of the six habitats comprising the centre, each reflecting a different aspect of our Province: The Lakes, Nature, Rural, Small Towns, City, and Fashion. Each zone will offer different products and be identified by different décor.
Floors will range from hardwood to lime stone, from ceramic tiles to carpets; different colour schemes and patterns will decorate the walls. Vaughan Mills will be a rather unique mall, the first in Canada belonging to the Mills chain.
Most of the stores already rented out will go to brand name outlets: Tommy Hilfiger (the chain will open its world's largest store), Benetton, Timberland, Burlington Coat, and the very first Canadian outlet of Bass Pro, a veritable paradise for lovers of the outdoors.
If the 'lucky' reporters were able to visit the site (albeit wearing hard hats and safety boots), the public at large will do so more comfortably on November 4. Preparations for the festivities accompanying the official opening are shrouded in secrecy, but a confidential source told us that they should last at least a week.
In less than two months, then, the 6,000-car parking lot will be filled by thousands of visitors flocking from Vaughan, Toronto, southern Ontario, and the United States. "For the first time, the staff of Vaughan Mills," explained Paul Gleeson, VP for Development of Ivanhoe Cambridge, a Quebec company that joined The Mills in this endeavour, "will include a position for tourist promotion, i.e. a person who will deal with promoting Vaughan Mills beyond the border and with the organizers of international conferences and conventions."
This huge flow of people and cars, however, should not disrupt Vaughan's quiet life, except for its economic fallout. The ramp that will link Hwy 400 with the mall's parking lot, easing traffic in the area, is almost finished.
