University research bears fruit, and the Federal government is funding new research chairs in universities across Canada. Ottawa has pledged $138.3 million for 137 new Canada Research Chairs. Out of this total, Ontario universities will receive over $50 million, over half of which will go to the University of Toronto. The announcement came from Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Joe Volpe, on the occasion of a meeting at the UofT in the presence of President Robert Birgeneau, Vice President (Research) John Challis, Vice President (Government and Institutional Relations) Carolyn Hughes Tuohy, and CRC Chair Daniel Trefler.
The UofT managers expressed their great satisfaction and underscored that the Federal funding is a recognition of the importance of research carried out in Canadian universities. Minister Volpe remarked, "Canada's investment in research has led the country to the first place among industrialized countries in number of patents granted. Canada is among the world's top countries for research and development."
President Birgeneau and the other university leaders in attendance highlighted the role that Canadian universities play in supporting the economy through research. "Otherwise," they said, "Canada could not compete on the global marketplace."
The close connection between government, universities, and businesses boosts our economy, and this, according to Joe Volpe, "is due to the quality and creativity of our knowledge base. Canada is rich in talented people. We must maintain our reputation of excellence in research, to ensure our place in the global economy."
The national announcement was made on April 5 by Lucienne Robillard, Minister of Industry and minister responsible for the Canada Research Chairs Program.
The $50 million earmarked for Ontario will go to 10 universities to support 50 new Canada Research Chairs: one at Brock University, one at Carleton University, three at McMaster University, six at Queen's University, one at the Royal Military College of Canada, seven at the University of Western Ontario, two at the University of Guelph, 25 at the UofT, and two at the University of Waterloo.
