As a confirmation of the growing friendship and cultural and economic exchanges between the cities of Toronto and Milan, Italy, Councillor for Fashion, Tourism and Recreation Giovanni Bozzetti announced last week that Missoni will participate in the Toronto Fashion Week, from March 22 to 25, at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex. The world-renowned fashion house will thus celebrate its 50th anniversary of activity. Honouring the twinning of Milan and Toronto, and hoping to boost trade in the fashion industry, the Missoni family will bring to Canada's catwalks a retrospective of their work.
Toronto mayor David Miller will present Missoni with a Special Award for their great contribution to fashion in the past half century.
The coloured knitwear produced by this veritable fashion empire became important staples in several generations' wardrobes, being worn by women all over the world, including celebrities such as Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz, or Sharon Stone.
"The Missoni family is honoured of receiving these awards from such an important fashion centre as Toronto, a city that generates talented designers and personalities of style. Toronto has a special place in our hearts, also because Canadians love our clothes," declared Missoni, underscoring that Canada is among the fashion house's most important international markets. According to Joe Halstead, in charge of the Department of Economic Development, Culture, and Tourism at the City of Toronto, "fashion is a focal point in the twinning agreements between Milan and Toronto. It represents a strong point in common between Italy and Canada, with fashion being a distinctive trait of Milan and one of that cities' main entrepreneurial activities. We're eagerly waiting for Missoni to come to the Toronto Fashion Week."
During Missoni's stay in Toronto, the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Toronto (ICCT), the Toulà Group and the Fashion Design Council of Canada (FDCC), a not-for-profit organization devoted to promoting fashion in Canada mainly through the Toronto Fashion Week, will host a series of exclusive events, as a tribute to Missoni's style and creativity.
