Nothing really compares to that "Little Black Dress" when it comes to celebrating the Eve of a new era.

It is at the advice of "fashion experts" (friends and family), that this begins with an icon of glamour and elegance helmed by one of the great 20th century women of style, and works its way to Toronto 2004. There is one very simple fashion fact to remember: Nothing really compares to that "Little Black Dress"... with a few accessories, that is.
The Chanel suit, pump and handbag are synonymous with classic elegance. A revolutionary designer from humble beginnings, Coco Chanel succeeded in creating chic clothing for women using practical fabrics. When Karl Lagerfeld took over the famed couture house in 1980, he modernized the Chanel look while still respecting and maintaining the style and sophistication the label is recognized for. Karl Lagerfeld's recent "Cinq a Sept" collection in December was a dazzling tribute to parties circa 1920 with fur bags, long, vibrant necklaces and belts a glitter with red and blue stones. Lagerfeld's pant suits were dramatic using light, sheer fabrics that are structural yet sensual and flow gracefully with each step. This collection also featured a number of trademark monochromatic pieces, like a solid black camisole with silver-beaded straps and ivory pants, which remain timeless. His reinvention of the conventional flapper dress is a welcome return to the Art Deco era.
While many of the upscale boutiques in Toronto have capitalized on the classic couture of the '20s and '30s, stylists at Holt Renfrew have focused on simple elegance. However as intriguing a flapper dress or corset may be, it is not a part of every woman's wardrobe. Holt's' evening wear - for the party girl in all of us - is versatile and fun. Black satin pants are a sharp base for any two-piece outfit, but Holt's also gives you the option to make them more "New Year's" with a collection of large rhinestone and cubic zirconia jewellery that would add just the right amount of glitter and glam to a classic black ensemble. "The bigger the better" trend in jewellery tends to come and go, but this holiday season, it is here with a vengeance.
