Symantec's Norton suite of applications has recently been released for the Apple world, after being completely rewritten under Cocoa and made available on CDs that boot both in Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.
Although Symantec has been renewing its whole catalogue, in the last few years it promoted two packages in particular, i.e. SystemWorks and Internet Security, now in their version 3.
The Systemworks suite includes the latest Norton AntiVirus 9 and Norton Utilities 8, two products that Apple users know very well. Their user interface has been revamped through Norton Launcher, a convenient window managing all Symantec applications, split in three sectors of operation: Performance & Maintenance, Security, and Data Recovery. Each section is accessible by clicking on a button.
Norton Utilities, the software suite that repairs and optimized hard disks, now includes components that are completely native to Mac OS X.
The two well-known main features, DiskDoctor (for repairing damaged files) and SpeedDisk (for HD defragmenting and optimizing), have been complemented with SpeedDisk Editor, which allows users to create profiles specifying the priorities for disk optimization.
Norton Utilities now also includes two new solutions, Wipe Info and Volume Recover; the former allows users to manage permanent and safe file deletion, while the latter is a virtual disk used for quick identification of the files to be repaired.
On the antivirus side, since most viruses out there are not a problem for Apple machines, Symantec has chosen to introduce some changes in the new version of the programme.
AntiVirus now identifies and eliminates Mac and PC viruses, which should finally get that IT guy off your back for good. The programme now includes a Quarantine feature that identifies viruses and drops them in a "safe corner" where they can do no harm, waiting for new software to be developed for recovering corrupted files. AutoProtect enables the Symantec suite to find viruses also in compressed archives; LiveUpdate downloads from the Internet just the definitions needed in the specific case at hand.
