Next week Toronto rolls out the red carpet for the fifth annual Toronto Italian Film Festival, which begins June 11 at the Bloor Cinema.
"We are extremely pleased with the line-up of films this year," says event coordinator Carlo Coen. "There is a lot of promising young talent who have been placed very prominently in the program and which we are looking forward to seeing."
A total of 14 films will be showcased at this year's festival, including three new short features directed by Italian-Canadian filmmakers. Coen says the Italian-Canadian element of the festival has been slightly expanded this year to facilitate the growing number of quality films being submitted.
"More space has been dedicated to the Canadian component simply because the films are really good," he says. "This is something we decided we wanted to put more care into and promote."
Generating the most buzz around the festival camp are two Canadian premieres by filmmakers Luciano Ligabue who directed Da Zero a Dieci (From Zero to Ten) and Paulo Virzi who directed My Name is Tanino.
Da Zero a Dieci, Ligabue's 2002 film slotted to run opening night at 9:30 p.m., is the famous Italian rock star's second feature after Radiofreccia showcased in the festival two years ago.
The tale is set in the spectacular Italian resort city of Rimini where young people manage to learn a vital moral lesson despite taking part in many facets of debauchery such as nightclubs, women and drink.
Partially shot in Toronto, Virzi's film My Name is Tanino is a tale of a young Sicilian who falls in love with an American tourist visiting the island. But when it is time for the beautiful vixen to return home to the United States, Tanino is bound by love and decides to follow her in the hopes of capturing the "American Dream". Unfortunately for Tanino, his expectations fall short and he is forced to return to Sicily empty handed.
Other films expected to draw attention at the festival are Velocita Massima or V-Max by Daniele Vicari who was awarded the David di Donatello prize for best debut director; and Soul Mate, (L'Anima Gemella) directed by world renowned Italian actor and director Sergio Rubini.
