From the makers of that wonderful bug documentary Microcosmos comes this stunning and hypnotic travelogue about birds' migration around the world. Featuring almost no dialogue, this extraordinary feature follows the route of migratory birds that fly thousands of miles, switching climates to survive, and then fly back from where they came from.
Narrated and directed by famous French movie star and celebrity Jacques Perrin, Winged Migration focuses on various species of birds - identified with captions - as they leave their environment and make the treacherous journey to the Arctic in order to procreate, and then return home amidst more danger. Through their voyages the viewer is treated to some of the world's most gorgeous landmarks, and some of its more shameful legacies such as pollution and hunting.
The only thing missing from Winged Migration is a background on how the filmmakers shot the sequences. Rumours have it that crew members camped out with the birds for months in order to get the right shots.
Extraordinary indeed.
