Phil Western is an under sung electronic musician from Vancouver, who's done some programming for Nine Inch Nails and collaborated with Skinny Puppy's cEvin Key in Download and Plateau. Western's first recordings were in techno - as DJ Philth he was part of Off & Gone which recorded for Sven Vath's prestigious Harthouse label in 1996. Working again with fellow sampler and guitar player Tim Hill, Western follows up his debut solo release The Escapist (1998, Map Music) with another set of tracks bridging the gap between rock and space-y Orb style techno. The result is the kind of psychedelic guitar music recently revived to the sound of big beats by Spiritualized and Chemical Brothers. And like the Skinny Puppy crew, Western and Hill like to play the prankster with dark movie samples and sound bytes (Charlie Manson sings his classick "Garbage Dump" in "Colour Speaks"). This CD is now available with a limited bonus orange vinyl 10" EP featuring a nice funk-house groove, "Therapy," from their website at www.colourspeaks.com.
