De-Phazz Daily Lama - Phass-a-delic/Verve/Universal Jazz By Chris Twomey

The return of De-Phazz brings the promise of summer in the form of stylish compositions and breezy grooves. Hitting an easy-going stride within the rhythmic variety of their breakthrough Death By Chocolate release from last year, Daily Lama improves on De-Phazz's take on bossa-jazz ("Looks"), Neville Brothers-style gumbo funk ("Preachin' To The Choir") and Burt Bacharach-ian stringy romance ("You Stayed"). And now added to their well-blended ingredients are reggae sounds in the dreamy groove of "Nightmare" and the dubbed rhythms and MC patois of "True North." Keeping De-Phazz's many influences and contributors together is ring leader Pit Baumgartner, who's production is smooth and reverential to classic jazz/funk/soul, while slipping in enough surprises to keep things fun.
