Prefuse 73 The '92 Vs '02 Collection - Warp/Outside Music By Chris Twomey

Atlanta's Scott Herren presents his fresh approach to hip hop and jazz through several projects including Prefuse 73 which took part in the Warp label's Nesh event with LFO (the original) at the Phoenix Concert Theatre on August 1st. The dates in the title refer to the meeting of hip hop beats (the "'92") and contemporary electronica in his progressive music. Prefuse tracks are special for their easy-going downtempo grooves informed by the micro melodies of the glitch generation, as well as the melancholic chord structures of his idm labelmates like Boards Of Canada. On The '92 Vs '02 Collection the jazz element enters in the form of the treated keyboard and vocal chorus chord progression that gives a celebratory vibe to the quirky sounds of "It Never Entered." Elsewhere, as Savath+Savalas, Herren's music falls more on the jazz side. Featuring four acoustic players The Rolls And Waves EP (on Hefty Records) treats mellow jazz to a similar update as his hip hop influences, like a new ECM sound for the digital age.
