If you've never heard of Bill Porter, you've been missing out on one today's most remarkable stories, that of a man who overcame infirmities and prejudices to rise to the top of his profession.
This month, The Movie Network is presenting the exclusive Canadian premiere of Door to Door, a movie by Steven Schacter based on the life of man who, today, is still working.
Porter (played terrifically by William M. Macy) was born with cerebral palsy, and thanks to the guidance of his courageous mother (Helen Mirren) he never backed from persisting in his goals. After talking himself into a job as a door-to-door salesman for a catalogue firm in Portland, Oregon Porter not only became the company's greatest salesman but also managed to forge lifelong friendships with his clients. His life was recently the subject of 20/20 segment, and though reclusive and very private, Porter still continues to sell products.
The film, which airs on August 21, also stars Kyra Sedgewick as Porter's assistant, and Kathy Baker as one of his customers. Not to be missed!

Cinematheque's Summer season is coming to an end, but there's still time to catch Luchino Visconti's controversial Rocco and His Brothers (August 2 and 3) featuring a new and exclusive print and scenes originally censored by Italian authorities. The film centres on a family of five brothers who move from Sicily to the south of Milan only to encounter depredation and crime. Screenings take place at AGO's Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas St. W.
