The Kodak DC3400 sports a lightweight, compact design, very similar to standard traditional cameras, making it very handy. The body, built in a metallicized plastic, has a good "grip" area on the right-hand side, offering easy access to every single control.
The camera is equipped with an optical viewfinder for choosing subjects, and also includes a 1.8-inch real-time LCD colour display, located on the back, allowing just-taken shots to be reviewed. Zoom and Mode control are perfectly accessible and easy to use. One of the most pleasant aspects of the Kodak machines is their ease of use, enabling even amateurs to capture images without necessarily spending a day reading a manual.
The 2.3 CCD megapixel camera offers two resolution modes and three "image quality settings" to make it easy for those who may want to either print pictures or just send photos via the Internet. The DC3400 comes with an 8Mb compact flashcard for storing your pictures. The 8MB card will be a fair starting point for your webshots, but when one wants to fully exploit the camera’s potential, i.e. maximum resolution, it is better to keep one or two spare cards always available, since 12 photos can fill one to capacity. Image quality is decidedly interesting, both outside and inside, however in poorly lit environments the built-in zoom is not very useful, unless the subject is quite close.
The DC3400 uses a 2x optical zoom, comparable to a 38 mm-76 mm lens for a 35mm camera, and also features a 3x digital zoom. Even if lens quality is not an issue, the zoom seems rather limited, especially since most digital cameras on the market are equipped with at least a 3x zoom.
Coming with both a serial and a USB port, the Kodak camera is perfectly compatible both with PCs and with Macs, and it includes both NTSC and PAL video output capabilities for reviewing images on a TV set. Downloading the picture on the computer is very easy and after doing so one can use the photo-retouching program that comes bundled with the camera.
