Norton Internet Security 2000 (Symantec)
by Alessandro Cancian

The Internet, or the Big Brother! The development of the Net in the last few years brought with it factors both positive and negative. Among the negative aspects, security deserves a specific mention. How secure are our computers nowadays? Judging from recent events, very little, and much remains to be done from this point of view.
As of today, however, not only do big systems come under attack, but also home users machines. The availability of high-speed connections such as cable modems or ADSL services helped the hackers, insofar as computers now remain online for prolonged periods of time, allowing intruders to locate them. How can we protect ourselves, then? For those among us less versed in computer systems, Symantec is offering a very interesting product: Norton Internet Security 2000.
NIS2000 is a firewall software able to deny access to our computer, connected to the Internet, to unauthorized people. The software package offers much more than a protection against eventual hackers, however: NIS2000, in fact, also includes a copy of Norton AntiVirus 2000, and even an Internet access control ideally suited to those with children.
By simply creating different user accounts for all the people accessing your computer, youll be able to control undesirable sites or forbid the use of dangerous programs, such as chat software. In regards to children, for instance, youll be able to restrict access to a list of open sites, creating your own or adopting the list prepared (and periodically updated) by Symantecs experts.
During my tests, I verified NIS2000s efficiency as a protection software, and considering that the only step I had to take after installing it was to activate it, the whole system seems remarkably easy and user-friendly.
In spite of your degree of inexperience, NIS2000 comes to your rescue by making the entire technological process much easier. After trying it out, I can guarantee that NIS2000 will be one of your best buys. NIS2000 is available for Win 95-98 at the price of $114.99 (CDN).
