Captivating Capri
The Jewel of the SouthBy Benedetta Lamanna
One of three islands guarding the Bay of Naples, Capri is an oasis of lush green vegetation surrounded by deep blue waters.
The island contains two residential centres: Capri, which is situated between two mountain ranges, and Anacapri, nestled in the green valley behind Monte Solaro.
Many people believe that the island derives its name from the Latin word for goat, capreae. However, in actuality, the island gets its name from the Greek word for wild boar, kapros.
The island itself has been subject to many influences, particularly in its cuisine. French, Spanish and Greek influences abound in its main dishes, which include primarily fish, fresh vegetables and olive oil. Meat is not a staple to the diet of the island’s inhabitants, as it was considered too expensive to be a daily dish.
One site to be sure to visit is the Villa Jovis, a magnificent villa from which the emperor Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire from 27 AD until 37 AD.
