Swift - Mute/Fusion III

By Chris Twomey

Here's an added value CD and DVD set from composer Simon Fisher Turner, best known for his work with film director Derek Jarman. Like a previous release on Mute, Shwarma, this new one is a kind of travelogue, featuring location recordings from places like Iceland, Morocco and southern Australia. A variety of musicians are heard including Spring Heel Jack's Ashley Wales and "occasional" Medieval Babe Dorothy Carter, but Turner's main collaborator is Israeli Gilad Atzmon, who contributes jazz melodics on woodwinds and brass. The musical and voice pieces are as varied as the scenes visited, sometimes private and solemn, at others rhythmic and distorted. Then on the DVD a film put together by Adam Shepherd samples footage from Turner and eight others, giving the 20 made-to-measure musical moments an interesting experimental visual dimension, who's variety works well on random play.
