X75 PrinTrio

By Alessandro Cancian

Multifunction printers have managed to conquer increasing shelf space in the stores. The boom of All-in-One models is mostly due to two factors, better performance and much-reduced prices.
Lexmark Canada recently presented its new X75 PrinTrio (named for its print/scan/copy functionality), a real bargain product ideally suited for the SOHO market.
The new Lexmark All-in-One doesn't claim to be a high quality photo printer, but is capable of decent printouts for your school or business presentation, both in colour or black and white. Compact and lightweight, this printer takes up very little desktop space.
Lexmark claims that the PrinTrio is capable of 2,400 by 1,200 dpi output, at advertised speeds up to 11 ppm in black and 6 ppm in colour, although times are considerably longer if one intends to print at the highest resolution (over 20 minutes per photo).
The flatbed scanner is very simple to use, thanks to the predefined settings that the Lexmark software offers.
Installation is quite simple and doesn't require a Ph.D. in computer technology. I personally like the car-hood-style lock that holds the cover while changing cartridges. The ink software monitor, however, is not accurate.
The printer is Mac and PC compatible but the quality of the drivers is best on the PC side, leaving Apple OS X users a little disappointed in terms of photo quality. The printer comes bundled with computer fax software and an OCR text scanning program.Overall performances for the X75 PrintTrio are decent and the $149 CDN makes it an interesting solution for your work at home.
