Ladytron

Light&Magic - Emperor Norton/Outside Music

By Chris Twomey

This second full-length release from the Liverpool keyboard group will consolidate their place in the synth-pop revival which an enterprising New York promoter has dubbed "electroclash" (copyright Larry Tee). Despite their American fans' reaction Ladytron are very much a European group, from their moniker's homage to early Roxy Music to their plugged-in pop's debt to Kraftwerk (especially their first single, He Took Her To A Movie's resemblance to The Model). Now with better production than their acclaimed debut, Ladytron continue to borrow the conventions of an earlier electronic era, pointing their music-making machines towards the blunt tones of The Normal's cold wave classic Warm Leatherette for inspiration for the opening track True Mathematics. In the following tracks they also revisit the sounds of New York electro chanteuse Shannon (Turn It On), Orchestral Maneouvres (Seventeen), and Giorgio Moroder (Cease2xist). The cool of their re-creations of discotheque rhythms is however softened by vocalist Mira Aroyo's dreamy delivery, which adds an all-too-contemporary ironic personality to their precisely programmed sound. Ladytron keyboardist/co-founder Reuben Wu will be bringing his DJ show to Toronto's Fez Batik club on October 25th.
